In the 1880s, a man named LaMarcus Thompson, a hosiery businessman and devout Christian, wanted to draw Americans away from saloons, brothels, and other amusements he considered sinful. Inspired by Pennsylvania's Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, he opened the Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway at Coney Island in 1884, offering visitors a more wholesome thrill. The 600-foot ride traveled at 6 mph, cost a nickel, and became an immediate success that helped launch America's roller coaster industry.
