Downtown Lost Its Directional Meaning

Downtown Lost Its Directional Meaning

By the 1830s, New Yorkers used downtown for the original settlement at Manhattan's southern tip, which also served as the city's main business center. As New York expanded northward, residents called the newer residential districts uptown because north appeared up and south appeared down on maps. Other American cities adopted the name "downtown" during the late 19th century for their commercial cores, stripping the word of its directional meaning. By the early 1900s, it had become the standard American term for a city center, regardless of its geographic location.
