Kuwait Civilians Hid Zoo Animals

During Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, civilians hid animals from Kuwait Zoo in their homes, including three llamas and two Malaysian sun bears. After about 250 Iraqi soldiers occupied the zoo, young Kuwaitis fed the animals and later slipped rare birds and mammals into private homes as restrictions eased. The sun bears went to separate houses, and after the war a woman called the zoo's director, and said, "Please come get your bear." The rescue network also saved a crowned crane and several peacocks, although soldiers killed or removed much of the collection during the seven-month occupation.
