Mittelschmerz Causes Pain During Ovulation

Ovulation can cause one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic pain called mittelschmerz, which may range from a mild twinge to sudden, sharp pain that interferes with daily life. The name combines the German words for "middle" and "pain" because symptoms often occur around the middle of the menstrual cycle, usually about two weeks before the next period. The pain may result when a growing follicle stretches and ruptures to release an egg, and it can last from a few minutes to 48 hours. Most cases are harmless, but severe or persistent pain should be evaluated because other conditions can cause similar symptoms.
