Descartes' Dreams Inspired Analytic Geometry

According to biographer Adrien Baillet, French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes, later famous for "I think, therefore I am," experienced three dreams on November 10-11, 1619, inside a stove-heated room in Neuburg an der Donau. Descartes believed a divine spirit had revealed a new philosophy and concluded that pursuing science would lead him toward true wisdom. By the time he left the room, he had formulated analytic geometry and the idea of applying mathematical methods to philosophy.
