In 1878, 19-year-old Burmese princess Supayalat and 20-year-old King Thibaw reached the throne after a bloody succession coup in Mandalay. During Thibaw's planned wedding to her elder sister, Supayalat entered the ceremony and had herself anointed queen, breaking ancient custom. She then prevented Thibaw from maintaining the traditional royal harem, although he later also married her younger sister. When he secretly took a pregnant concubine, a woman named Daing Khin Khin, Supayalat had her executed.
