While casting Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Chow spotted martial artist and actress Yuen Qiu even though she had not come to audition for the role of Landlady. She had accompanied a friend and sat off to the side, slouching with a cigarette in her mouth while the friend auditioned. Chow's team had spent more than a year seeking someone who looked dowdy, could perform kung fu, and connected the film to the older movies he loved. After Chow learned who Yuen Qiu was, he cast her in the role.
