Silver Hairpin's Propaganda Backfired Domestically

North Korea's Korean Film Studio and the pro-Pyongyang Chongryon organization co-produced Silver Hairpin (1985), filming it in Japan to depict the discrimination and hardships experienced by ethnic Koreans there. When the movie was shown in North Korea, however, its images of everyday Japanese life undermined the intended patriotic message. Many viewers reportedly concluded that Koreans living in Japan appeared better off than they were.
