Convicts Form Australia's First Police

The first organized police unit in colonial Australia was staffed entirely by convicts. In August 1789, Governor Arthur Phillip selected eight of New South Wales' best-behaved convicts to form a night watch that protected Sydney from thieves after dark. It was an early local law enforcement body rather than the modern New South Wales Police Force, which was formally established in 1862.
