The first man to run a mile in under four minutes was British runner and NHS junior doctor Roger Bannister. On May 6, 1954, he completed a morning shift at St. Mary's Hospital in London before catching a midday train to Oxford. Later that day, he ran the mile at Oxford's Iffley Road track in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds, breaking a barrier many had considered unreachable.
