Electric Cargo Ship Hauls Coal

The first fully electric cargo ship was launched in China in 2017, and its designer claimed that the vessel posed "no threats to the environment." Its 2,400-kWh lithium-ion battery could carry 2,200 tons of cargo for about 50 miles before requiring a two-hour recharge. Despite producing no carbon emissions while underway, the ship was intended primarily to haul coal to power stations along the Pearl River.
