Bean Victory Raised Ticket-Sneaking Suspicions

The Mr. Bean movie opened opposite the R-rated Starship Troopers in 1997 and unexpectedly became the US box-office champion that weekend. Visual effects supervisor Phil Tippett recalled producer Jon Davison reporting that Starship Troopers had "tanked" with an opening of only $15 million. The filmmakers suspected that underage viewers had bought tickets for Mr. Bean and then sneaked into Starship Troopers because they could not purchase tickets for the R-rated film directly.
