Nansen Expedition Met Rejected Rescuer

After abandoning their attempt to reach the North Pole in April 1895, Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen and a Norwegian dog-driving expert named Hjalmar Johansen spent more than 14 months crossing Arctic ice and surviving in Franz Josef Land. They passed eight months inside a stone-and-walrus-skin shelter called The Hole before continuing south in May 1896. On June 17, Nansen heard a dog barking near Cape Flora and encountered British explorer Frederick George Jackson, who brought both men to his expedition base. Jackson had previously applied to join Nansen's Fram expedition, but Nansen rejected him because he wanted only Norwegians.
