Scott Expedition Lost Polar Race

Between 1910 and 1913, British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition to conduct scientific research in Antarctica and reach the geographic South Pole first. Scott and four companions reached the Pole on January 17, 1912, only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team had beaten them by 34 days. All five members of Scott's polar party died during the return journey, although other members of the wider expedition survived.
