Mount Kennedy Expedition Reached Summit

In 1964, Canada named North America's highest unclimbed peak, Mount Kennedy, in honor of US president John F. Kennedy, nearly a year after his assassination. The roughly 14,000-foot mountain stands in Yukon's Saint Elias Mountains near the Alaska border. In 1965, Robert F. Kennedy joined a National Geographic Society expedition led by American mountaineer Jim Whittaker, and the party completed the mountain's first ascent. At the summit, Kennedy left his brother's PT-boat tie clips, a copy of his 1961 inaugural address, and a John F. Kennedy medallion.
