During the 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition, British explorer Ernest Shackleton led an attempt to become the first person to reach the South Pole from a base at Cape Royds, Antarctica. When his party departed, it left crates of Mackinlay's whisky and brandy beneath the expedition hut. In 2006, conservators from the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust discovered century-old crates encased in ice, including three whisky crates and two brandy crates. After recovering the whisky in 2010, they found 11 intact bottles in one crate, and a Scottish master blender named Richard Paterson used samples to recreate the lost whisky in 2011.
