For 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick used a $750,000 rotating spacecraft set measuring 38 feet across and 10 feet wide at its broadest point. The Vickers-Armstrong Engineering Group built the centrifuge to spin at up to 3 mph, with desks, consoles, bunks, and hibernation compartments secured inside. When filmmakers fixed a camera to the rotating structure, the set and camera completed 360-degree turns together while actors appeared to walk up the walls and across the ceiling. Panavision specially modified the Super Panavision camera magazines so they could continue operating upside down.
