False cognates are words that look or sound alike and carry similar meanings despite having different etymologies. They can appear in unrelated languages, related languages, or even within the same language. For example, bad means the same thing in English and Persian and sounds nearly identical in both. English bad may descend from Old English and Proto-Germanic roots, while Persian bad derives from Old Iranian wata, making the resemblance completely coincidental.
