A 2026 study found that passenger-capacity signs on many European lifts have become unrealistic as obesity levels and average body weight have risen. Researchers looked at 112 lifts built between 1972 and 2024 and found most makers still allow around 75 kilograms per passenger, about four kilograms under the current average adult weight. This means that some lifts may not be safe or comfortable for the number of passengers shown on their signs, and may even stop automatically if the total weight limit is exceeded.
