Leo Major Captured Ninety-Three Germans

Canadian soldier Leo Major landed at Juno Beach on D-Day and helped capture a German armored half-track containing communications equipment. During the Battle of the Scheldt later in 1944, he single-handedly brought 93 German prisoners back to Canadian lines. In April 1945, after his partner was killed during a reconnaissance mission near Zwolle, Major entered the occupied Dutch city alone and helped force its remaining German troops to withdraw. His actions spared Zwolle from a planned Allied bombardment and earned him the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
