Submarines Marked Juno And Sword

Before D-Day, British midget submarines X20 and X23 secretly reached their positions off Normandy on June 4 and then waited two days after bad weather postponed the invasion. Early on June 6, they surfaced and raised 18-foot telescopic masts fitted with seaward-facing lights while also operating radio beacons and underwater sound transmitters. X20 marked Juno Beach and X23 marked Sword Beach, helping guide the approaching British and Canadian forces to the correct landing sectors.
