Martha Gellhorn Became D-Day Stowaway

American war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, who was also Ernest Hemingway's third wife, was the only female reporter to land in Normandy on D-Day. After officials refused her accreditation, she boarded a hospital ship and hid in a toilet until it sailed across the English Channel. Gellhorn then went ashore with the medics, helped bring wounded soldiers back from the beaches, and reported what she saw and heard.
