Churchill Planned D-Day Channel Crossing

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill wanted to cross the English Channel with the main invasion force on D-Day. He continued pressing the idea until King George VI announced that if Churchill went, he would go too. The King's declaration forced Churchill to reconsider, and he eventually conceded that the plan was neither practical nor sensible. Six days after the landings, Churchill crossed aboard HMS Kelvin, inspected the Normandy beaches, and lunched with General Bernard Montgomery only three miles from the front.
