Macedonian king Alexander the Great carried an annotated copy of Homer's Iliad on his campaigns and reportedly kept it beneath his pillow beside his dagger. Greek philosopher Aristotle had prepared the special edition, which became known as the Iliad of the Casket. Alexander called the poem a "handbook of the military art" and modeled himself after its warrior Achilles.
