American rapper Soulja Boy reportedly wrote and recorded "Crank That" at home in just 10 minutes using an unregistered demo copy of FL Studio, previously called FruityLoops, and only its basic stock sounds. He posted the song and dance instructions on MySpace in 2007, before Interscope Records professionally rerecorded and released the final version that May. The single spent seven weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2008, it became the first song to sell 3 million digital copies in the United States, establishing it as one of the earliest major Internet-driven hits.
