Rwanda Mandates Monthly Community Service

Rwanda has Umuganda, a mandatory nationwide community service period from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the last Saturday of every month. All citizens between the ages of 18 and 65 who are able-bodied come together to clean streets, plant trees, clean ditches, repair infrastructure, or build homes for vulnerable residents. Those who do not participate without an exemption are liable to a fine of 5,000 Rwandan francs.
