In 2001, Swazi king Mswati III imposed a five-year ban on sex with girls under 18 to combat the country's HIV/AIDS epidemic. Two months later, he took a 17-year-old as his ninth wife and fined himself one cow for breaking his own decree. He married his 18-year-old 12th wife in June 2005, then ended the ban one year early that August. Within weeks, he selected a 17-year-old girl named Phindile Nkambule as his 13th wife-to-be.
