Apple Licensed iOS From Cisco

Apple did not own the iOS trademark when it adopted the name for its mobile operating system in 2010. Cisco owned the IOS trademark for its core operating system, which ran on millions of network infrastructure systems, so Apple licensed the name from Cisco. Cisco specified that the agreement covered only the trademark, not any of its technology.
