Sue Discovery Followed Flat-Tire Delay

On August 12, 1990, while waiting for a flat tire to be repaired before her fossil expedition left South Dakota's Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, American explorer and fossil collector Sue Hendrickson decided to explore cliffs the group had never checked. She found small bone fragments, then spotted larger bones protruding from a cliff, leading to the excavation of a T. rex skeleton that proved more than 90% complete by bulk. The specimen was named "Sue" after Hendrickson and is now permanently displayed at Chicago's Field Museum.
