Basil's Deer Hunt Proved Fatal

Byzantine Emperor Basil I died in 886 A.D. after a hunting accident in which his belt became caught in a deer's antlers and he was allegedly dragged 16 miles (25 km) through the woods. An attendant finally freed Basil by cutting him loose with a knife, but the emperor suspected the man of trying to assassinate him and had him executed. Basil contracted a fever after the accident and died.
