According to Aztec tradition, in 1323 the Mexica, who later founded the Aztec Empire, asked the ruler of Culhuacan for his daughter, and he agreed, believing she would receive an honored position among them. Instead, the Mexica sacrificed her and flayed her body as part of a ritual connected to the goddess Toci. They then invited her father to a ceremonial feast, where a Mexica priest appeared wearing his daughter’s flayed skin. Horrified, the ruler ordered an attack on the Mexica and drove them from the area.
