Agnodice Legend Challenged Medical Restrictions

Agnodice was a legendary Greek female physician who, according to an ancient account, disguised herself as a man because women were forbidden from practicing medicine in Athens. She became so popular with female patients that rival male physicians accused her of seducing them, forcing her to reveal that she was actually a woman during her trial. The women she had treated came to her defense, and the story says the law was changed to allow women to practice medicine. Modern scholars generally consider Agnodice a legendary rather than securely historical figure, since her story survives from a single ancient source attributed to Hyginus.
