In 2007, researchers searching for shipwrecks discovered a Stonehenge-like line of stones approximately 40 feet beneath Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. Underwater archaeology professor Mark Holley also found a boulder measuring about 5 feet long with markings that appeared to outline a mastodon's hump, head, trunk, tusk, ears, and legs. Some fissures looked natural while others appeared human-made, raising the possibility that the boulder carried a prehistoric petroglyph.
