Libations, the practice of pouring out alcohol for the dead, were common in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome more than 3,000 years ago. Versions of the custom appear in the Bible, the Iliad, and the Odyssey, making the modern act of "pouring one out" part of an extremely old tradition.
