Romania Privatized Homes For Tenants

After communism fell in 1989, Romania began selling state-owned houses and apartments to the tenants already living in them at extremely low prices. The mass privatization rapidly transferred most of the country's public housing into private hands. By 2018, more than 96 percent of Romanians lived in owner-occupied homes, giving Romania the highest homeownership rate in the world.
