Peru Built Presidential Prison Cells

Peru has jailed so many former presidents for corruption, abuse, or political crimes that the country turned Barbadillo, a former police academy site on the outskirts of Lima, into a special prison for ex-leaders. Alberto Fujimori became its first presidential inmate after courts convicted him of human rights abuses from his 1990s rule. By 2023, Pedro Castillo and Alejandro Toledo had also been held there as Peru’s corruption scandals and political turmoil filled the compound’s few cells.
