Susana Higuchi Challenged Fujimori's Corruption

Peruvian politician Susana Higuchi was married to Alberto Fujimori, the authoritarian president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, before she publicly accused his government of corruption. In 1994, while Fujimori still held office, she denounced him as corrupt and dictatorial after alleging that his relatives had misused Japanese-donated clothing meant for poor Peruvians. Fujimori responded by stripping her of the title of first lady and naming their daughter, Keiko Fujimori, in her place. Higuchi later divorced him, joined the opposition, and won election to the Peruvian Congress in 2000.
