At the current rate of erosion of about 30 centimeters, or 12 inches, per year, Niagara Falls will eventually wear away the remaining 32 kilometers, or 20 miles, to Lake Erie. The falls have been retreating since the last Ice Age as flowing water slowly cuts back through the Niagara Escarpment. If that rate continues, the falls could cease to exist in about 50,000 years.
