Nobel Won Washing Machine Prize

Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka, who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, revealed that he had been repairing his washing machine when he learned he had won the prize. During an interview, Yamanaka remarked, "I was in the middle of repairing my washing machine when I heard the news." The Japanese government responded by giving him 160,000 yen so he could purchase a new washing machine.
