German physicist Max Planck, the father of quantum theory, initially regarded his 1900 quantum hypothesis as little more than a mathematical trick for obtaining the correct results for black-body radiation. He did not believe that energy was actually emitted in discrete packets. Albert Einstein later gave the hypothesis a physical interpretation by using it to explain the photoelectric effect, helping establish quantum theory as a fundamental description of nature.
