Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman solved the Poincaré Conjecture, one of the most difficult problems in mathematics, and then turned down multiple honors, including the Fields Medal and the $1 million Millennium Prize offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Perelman withdrew from public life and showed little interest in fame or money after completing the proof. When a persistent journalist interrupted him at his home, Perelman ended the conversation by saying, "You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms."
