Surtsey's Unexpected Tomato Plant Growth

Scientists working in the restricted research zone on Surtsey, a volcanic island off the coast of Iceland that is closed to the public, discovered a tomato plant growing from solidified lava. The island is protected so researchers can study natural ecological succession without human interference. They later concluded that the tomato had sprouted from a seed that passed through the digestive system of one of the scientists.
