In 1869, Danish physicist Ludvig Lorenz developed an equation describing the relationship between a material's refractive index and its density. In 1878, Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz, who was unrelated to Lorenz despite their nearly identical names, independently derived the same equation. Because both scientists arrived at the same result separately, it became known as the Lorenz-Lorentz equation, a name that has confused students and scientists ever since.
