Dr. Robinson's Hanging Baby Experiments

In the late 1800s, a physician named Dr. Robinson investigated the remarkable gripping ability of newborn babies. To demonstrate the reflex, he reportedly had about 60 infants hang from a walking stick or bar using only their hands. The newborns were able to support their own weight because of a powerful instinctive grasp reflex present shortly after birth. Some infants reportedly remained suspended for surprisingly long periods, with a few holding on for up to two minutes.
