Although pregnancy normally prevents further ovulation, a rare phenomenon known as superfetation can occur when a woman releases another egg after she is already pregnant. If that egg is fertilized and successfully implants in the uterus, the woman can end up carrying two fetuses that began developing at different times. The fetuses therefore have different gestational ages despite sharing the same womb.
