During the American Revolution, Alexander Hamilton supported a proposal to recruit enslaved men into the Continental Army in exchange for their freedom. Writing in 1779, Hamilton argued that Black soldiers were as capable as white soldiers and could help address the army's manpower shortages. He also claimed that their "want of cultivation" and "habit of subordination" would make them well suited to military service.
