FDA Sunscreen Rules Stalled Since

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not significantly updated its sunscreen regulations since 1999 (as of June 2026), even as sunscreen technology has advanced in other parts of the world. As a result, many newer UV-filter ingredients used internationally remain unavailable in the United States. Of the 16 active sunscreen ingredients currently marketed in the U.S., the FDA considers only two, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, to be generally recognized as safe and effective.
