Green Day’s "Wake Me Up When September Ends" came from American musician Billie Joe Armstrong’s childhood grief. His father died of esophageal cancer on September 1, 1982, when Armstrong was 10 years old. Years later, Armstrong turned that loss into one of Green Day’s most personal songs.
