German composer Ludwig van Beethoven once faced an improvisation duel against a rival named Daniel Steibelt. During the challenge, Beethoven took a piece of Steibelt’s own music, turned it upside down, played it, and then improvised on that theme for more than an hour. Steibelt left halfway through the performance.
