After Johnny Cash’s guitar player died in 1968, Cash needed help at a show when temporary replacement Carl Perkins could not make it. An audience member named Bob Wootton asked Cash if he could fill in for the night, and Cash said yes. Wootton played the show and turned that one chance from the crowd into a permanent job. He remained Cash’s guitar player for the next 29 years.
